This is not medical advice
project-diada.org publishes general educational information about psychology and human behaviour. Nothing on this site is medical advice, psychological advice, diagnosis or treatment. Reading it does not create a clinical, therapeutic or professional relationship of any kind.
We are not your doctor, therapist or psychologist, and we cannot be. We do not know your history, your circumstances or your symptoms, and no article can account for them.
Why research findings may not apply to you
Psychology research describes patterns across groups. It cannot tell you what is happening with you specifically. A finding that holds on average across a thousand people may not hold for any particular one of them — and most studies we cover involve far fewer than a thousand, often in a single country, frequently university students.
Most findings in this field are correlational: two things occur together, which does not establish that one caused the other. We are careful about this in our writing, and readers should be careful too.
Get professional help for anything that matters
If you are worried about your mental health, your child’s development, or a relationship, speak to a qualified professional. A GP is a reasonable first step, and does not require things to feel like a crisis.
Never delay seeking professional advice, or disregard advice you have been given, because of something you read here.
Medication
We report research about medication. We never advise anyone to start, stop, change or adjust a medication. Those decisions belong with the person prescribing it. Stopping psychiatric medication without medical supervision can be dangerous.
If you are in crisis
If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number.
Crisis lines by country are listed at findahelpline.com. Talking to someone is a reasonable thing to do well before things reach a crisis.
Accuracy and currency
We work hard to be accurate, and we still get things wrong. Research moves, findings fail to replicate, and papers are occasionally retracted. Articles reflect the evidence as we understood it on the date shown. Older pieces may no longer reflect the current state of the field.
