A homecoming celebration at a Georgia high school turned into a crime scene Saturday evening, when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, leaving three adults wounded. Deputies say a fight between two women escalated after bystanders broke it up, and 27-year-old Aiyana Lane is now facing a stack of felony charges.

TL;DR: Three people were shot Saturday around 6:05 p.m. in the parking lot of Lucy C. Laney High School after the school’s homecoming game, sustaining injuries described as not life-threatening. Aiyana Lane, 27, was arrested at the scene and charged with three counts of aggravated assault plus weapons charges. School officials say only adults were involved and no students were hurt.

What happened in the parking lot

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the high school’s parking lot on Laney-Walker Boulevard at about 6:05 p.m. Saturday, October 17, after reports that multiple people had been struck by gunfire, according to the sheriff’s office statement reported by the Augusta Chronicle.

Investigators learned that a physical confrontation had broken out between Lane and another woman in the tailgate area. Bystanders stepped in and separated the two, the sheriff’s office said. But the confrontation did not end there.

“[Lane] produced a firearm and fired at least one shot in the direction of the initial victim,” according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office account. Three people were struck by the gunfire. Emergency crews took all three to area hospitals, where their injuries were described as not life-threatening.

Deputies recovered a firearm at the scene and took Lane into custody there, according to a second local report from CSRA Crime, which cites the sheriff’s office. She was booked into Richmond County the same day.

The charges against Lane

Lane faces three counts of aggravated assault, one for each person shot, plus possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree cruelty to children, and carrying weapons within school safety zones, at school functions, or on school transportation, according to the sheriff’s office.

The school-zone weapons charge reflects where the shooting happened: a high school campus during school activities. The cruelty-to-children charge is a third-degree count under Georgia law; the sheriff’s office did not elaborate on its basis in its public statements.

As with every criminal case, Lane is presumed innocent. An arrest and charges are accusations, not a conviction, and the case now moves to the Richmond County court system.

School says students were not involved

The Richmond County School System moved quickly to reassure families. In an audio statement recorded Saturday, district Director of Media and Public Relations Haley Cuesta said that only adults were involved in the incident and “that all student athletes, cheerleaders, band members and students participating in homecoming activities are safe and accounted for.”

The district’s own police force responded alongside sheriff’s deputies. Cuesta said one school system officer was hurt while responding to a separate altercation during the emergency response and “is reportedly doing well.”

Lanely’s principal, Marvin Washington, also sent a letter to families expressing deep disappointment over the violence following what had otherwise been a successful homecoming, according to local reporting.

What investigators are doing next

The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are still piecing together exactly how the confrontation started and who else may have been involved. The Augusta Chronicle reports that additional details will be released as the case develops.
