BALTIMORE — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl — a killing police say grew out of an argument over a parking spot at a Baltimore park during a youth football homecoming event.
TL;DR: Tyree Reynolds, 23, was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Khloe Ishway, 12, who was shot Oct. 3 near Leon Day Park in northwest Baltimore. Police say a parking-spot dispute between two men escalated into gunfire that killed Khloe and wounded four others. A second suspect remains at large.
A homecoming day turns to chaos
The shooting unfolded around 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 3 near Leon Day Park in northwest Baltimore, USA Today reported, citing the Baltimore Police Department. A youth football homecoming event was underway at the park, and the day had been filled with food and celebration before gunfire erupted.
Officers responding to reports of gunfire found Khloe Ishway and a 25-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Khloe was taken to a hospital, where she later died. The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A 28-year-old man and a 23-year-old man also arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds, and a 35-year-old woman later sought treatment for a graze wound to her back, police said. The four surviving victims were reported in stable condition.
An argument over a parking spot
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the shooting appeared to have stemmed from a dispute over a parking spot between two men who pulled guns on each other. What began as a petty argument ended with a child dead.
“Khloe was just 12 years old. She should have a whole life ahead of her: school, a career, time spent with family and friends. Instead, she was killed because two adult men resorted to deadly violence to resolve an argument over a parking spot,” Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Commissioner Worley said in a joint statement.
At an Oct. 3 news conference, Scott called the violence “one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The arrest
Reynolds was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with first-degree murder in Khloe’s death, the Baltimore Police Department announced Oct. 7. He also faces multiple additional charges including attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, according to the joint statement from the mayor and police commissioner.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police said they are continuing to search for a second suspect believed to have been involved in the shooting.
A community in mourning
The killing shocked the community. Coach Mark Brown of the Charm City Buccaneers youth football league told WBAL-TV the homecoming game had been a “beautiful day” before the gunfire — “next thing you know, pandemonium.” Anthony Williams, a founder of the league, described the park as a “haven” for children and families.
On the evening of Oct. 6 — hours after Reynolds’ arrest was announced — family members, friends, and community members gathered at Leon Day Park for a candlelight vigil honoring Khloe. Mourners brought candles and balloons to remember the 12-year-old and support her family.
Khloe’s mother, Kristin Reese, expressed gratitude after learning of the arrest. “Thank God. That’s all,” she told WBAL-TV. “There were too many people for someone not to see something, so I’m grateful for that.” She added, per CBS Baltimore: “I love how everybody is supporting my baby. My baby’s name is going to live on forever.”
Reynolds is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to contact Baltimore police homicide detectives or submit anonymous tips through Metro Crime Stoppers.
