An Oregon woman has been accused of running her car over her boyfriend after he confronted her over stolen lottery winnings — though she claims she was the one whose life was in danger.
Mary Ann McKinzy, 55, was extradited to Multnomah County on Sept. 18 after U.S. Marshals arrested her in Bakersfield, California, according to the Portland Police Bureau. She faces charges of second-degree murder, assault and negligent homicide in the death of 75-year-old James S. Miller. Court documents cited by The Oregonian say McKinzy and Miller were dating at the time Miller won $3,200 from a lottery ticket.

Those same documents say Miller split $1,700 of his winnings with McKinzy, but she later took an additional $800 from him without his knowledge. That theft, prosecutors say, led Miller to round up “a couple of his boys” so he could track her down and get his money back.
On Nov. 28, 2025, a friend drove Miller to McKinzy’s apartment complex in Portland, where the two men spotted her sitting in her car in the parking lot. The friend later told investigators he wasn’t sure what Miller intended to do once they got there. He said he heard Miller warn McKinzy to “open the door or I’m going to bust the window open.”
Police say Miller then directed his friend to pull his car in front of McKinzy’s to block her from driving away. McKinzy allegedly responded by reversing into the friend’s vehicle. When the friend got out to look at the damage, he told police he saw Miller throw a knife toward McKinzy’s car. Surveillance video reportedly shows Miller puncturing her tires with the blade.
McKinzy then allegedly threw her car into reverse and backed over Miller. When the friend told her to move off him, she reportedly said Miller had been “trying to kill” her before driving off.

Miller was declared dead at the scene. Police initially treated the case as a possible stabbing before determining that he had died from blunt force trauma.
By the time investigators secured a warrant for her arrest, McKinzy had already left Oregon. Her car turned up shortly afterward at a tire shop, where hubcaps inside matched one recovered from the crime scene. She reportedly left behind a number of her personal belongings when she fled.
The Portland Police Bureau said U.S. Marshals located McKinzy in Bakersfield on Aug. 5. She is now being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center, with her next court date set for Sept. 29.
