A Domestic Violence Call Turns Deadly

Chief Paul Humphrey said in a statement to reporters Friday morning that the incident began just before 11 p.m. Thursday, October 15, when Fourth Division officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of Parthenia Avenue in response to a report of domestic violence involving shots fired.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had left Parthenia Avenue. Investigators tracked him to a motel in the 500 block of Phillips Lane, near the airport, where he was staying with a woman. Officers established a perimeter around the room and attempted for an extended period to persuade the suspect to come out.

Gunfire Erupts

The confrontation turned violent when the woman exited the room. “As she ran away, the suspect shot at officers, and three LMPD officers returned fire,” Humphrey said.

After the exchange of gunfire, LMPD’s crisis negotiation and SWAT teams responded and attempted to communicate with the suspect. About an hour later, SWAT deployed a drone into the area, and its images showed the suspect was dead.

Self-Inflicted Wound Also Found

A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect was shot at least once by officers and also suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Humphrey said. The precise sequence of the wounds remains part of the investigation.

Investigation Underway

LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit will investigate the police shooting, following standard procedure. Body camera footage will be released within 10 business days, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. The department has not released the suspect’s name.

Humphrey’s briefing came the same day he and department leadership shared body camera footage of a separate October 5 police shooting in which an officer shot a 15-year-old boy after police say the boy fired an AR-15 rifle toward his mother and the officer — a sign of a department trying to keep the public informed amid a heavy stretch of critical incidents.
