TRENTON, N.J. — A former senior correctional police officer who took thousands of dollars in bribes to smuggle contraband into a New Jersey state prison has been sentenced to three years behind bars — and permanently barred from ever holding public office in the state again.

TL;DR: Christopher Santana, 33, of Hackensack, was sentenced Oct. 5, 2026, to three years in New Jersey state prison for conspiracy to commit bribery. Between May 2024 and June 2025, while working at Northern State Prison, he accepted bribes from associates of inmates in exchange for smuggling contraband — including tobacco and unidentified liquids — into the facility. He pleaded guilty Aug. 18 and was fired in July 2025.

Caught with a bulge under his vest

According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Santana arrived for his scheduled evening shift at Northern State Prison on June 10, 2025, when law enforcement officers noticed a large bulge protruding from the chest area of his clothing. A search revealed two vacuum-sealed bags containing tobacco and three bottles of an unknown liquid, concealed under his protective vest and near his upper thigh, the AG’s office announced.

The ensuing investigation found that between approximately May 2024 and June 2025, Santana received thousands of dollars in bribes from associates of inmates incarcerated at the facility — in cash and through a personal mobile digital payment app — in exchange for smuggling contraband inside.

Guilty plea and sentence

On Aug. 18, 2026, Santana pleaded guilty before Judge Michael Ravin in Essex County Superior Court to one count of second-degree conspiracy to commit bribery. On Oct. 5, Judge Ravin sentenced him to three years in state prison.

As part of the sentence, Santana was permanently barred from holding any public office or public employment in New Jersey and ordered to forfeit $4,500 in alleged bribe payments, as agreed under his plea deal. He had already been terminated from the Department of Corrections in July 2025.

“A fundamental betrayal of the badge”

Attorney General Jennifer Davenport did not mince words: “Taking bribes to help inmates evade the very security measures he was responsible for enforcing is a fundamental betrayal of the badge — and of the public trust that comes with it. As demonstrated by the sentence imposed, abuses of trust by law enforcement officers will be met with significant repercussions.”

Martha Nye, interim director of the Division of Criminal Justice, added that the case “underscores the profound damage done when those entrusted with maintaining order choose instead to break the law alongside the people they are there to guard.”

NJDOC Commissioner Victoria L. Kuhn said the sentence “sends a definitive message: we have zero tolerance for actions that tarnish the badge,” and pledged the department would “continue to root out and remove anyone who violates the public trust.”

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Samantha Eaton of the DCJ Corruption Unit.
