Huawei just pulled the wraps off a phone that looks like it wandered in from the folding-phone aisle without actually folding. The Pura X View, launched in China, sports a notably wide 16:9.5 screen ratio — the same proportions found on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 — but there’s no hinge anywhere on it. It’s simply one solid slab of a phone with a display shaped like something you’d expect on a monitor or television, not a handset.
That’s really the headline feature here: Huawei appears to be the first company to stuff a folding-phone-style wide screen into a body that doesn’t fold at all. Most smartphones today stretch vertically for that tall, narrow look. The Pura X View goes the opposite direction, chasing width instead.
Despite the unusual screen shape, Huawei still managed to pack in a 7,000 mAh battery — a hefty capacity by any standard — while keeping the phone remarkably slim at just 6.68mm thick. How the company balanced those two things in such a thin chassis isn’t clear yet, since Huawei hasn’t released the full spec sheet.
What we do know comes from the phone’s official listing. The display runs at a resolution of 2,232 by 1,320 pixels and can reportedly hit a blistering 6,500 nits of peak brightness. Huawei also claims a 96.1% screen-to-body ratio, made possible by bezels shaved down to just 1.05mm. The exact screen size in inches hasn’t been confirmed by Huawei directly, though the company is expected to fill in that blank soon.
Flip the phone over and you’ll find a horizontal, pill-shaped camera module housing three lenses. Huawei hasn’t said anything official about the resolution of those cameras, nor has it detailed the processor inside, the charging speed, or the various storage tiers that might be offered. The company has confirmed the phone will come with 12GB of RAM and storage options topping out at a massive 1TB.
For now, much of the finer detail is filled in by leaks rather than official word. Reports circulating out of China point to a 6.39-inch display and a Kirin 9030s chipset powering the device. Those same rumors describe a triple rear camera setup with three 50-megapixel sensors — though until Huawei confirms it, that should be treated as unofficial.
Huawei says the rest of the story will come on August 28, when the company plans to reveal pricing, availability, and whatever specs it’s still holding back. That’s standard practice for a company that likes to tease hardware well ahead of a full reveal, but it does mean prospective buyers are being asked to commit somewhat blindly for now.
And commit they can: the Pura X View is already up for preorder on Huawei’s official online store in China, even though buyers won’t know the price or exact release date until later this month. It’s an unusual sequence — open orders before revealing cost — but it also signals Huawei is confident enough in the design to start building buzz early.
Whether this wide-screen, non-folding format catches on elsewhere remains to be seen. It’s a distinctive enough idea that other manufacturers will likely be watching closely to see how Chinese consumers respond once the phone actually ships.
